THE GOSPEL IN SONG
I wanted to sing, but being a new Christian, I didn’t know any songs, so I wrote my own.
The very first song I wrote, was ‘When the Going gets tough’. It is an invitation from Jesus to do for all what He had done for me. Then came the ‘Musical Drama of Jesus Christ’, which described the last three and a half days of His life. It was written in 1979 and would be recorded in Sydney Australia in 1982. In January 2020 I received the drama in digital form from a friend in Germany, Astrid, who had preserved her copy. For me, it was nothing short of divine intervention. The last time I had seen it was about 35 years ago. I had almost given up hope of ever seeing it again and was working on retrieving the script and melodies from my memories which was proving to be very difficult. ‘The Love of the Spirit’ is an expression of deep appreciation for God’s intimacy; the song ‘My Lord, My King’ also. ‘The Wedding Song’ was written in response to an invitation to sing at a wedding in Vatukoula, Fiji, in 1979. I have lost count of the number of weddings at which Seni and I sung the song. ‘The Eagle’ was written on the Sydney Harbour Bridge while collecting tolls during a university break in 1982. I was inspired by Isaiah 40:31. ‘Sunlight and Rain’ was written after a visit to a nursing home where I saw an old lady who had undergone surgery for breast cancer. It is the answer to my question as to how could these things be? ‘Everlasting love’ was inspired by Jeremiah 31:3 ‘The LORD hath appeared of old unto me, saying, Yea, I have loved thee with an everlasting love: therefore with lovingkindness have I drawn thee.’ This verse made a great impression on my life. I believed it with all my heart. ‘The Voice said Cry’ is an invitation to seek the kingdom of God first. ‘It is so Simple’ reveals the simplicity of being saved - just believe. “With a smile’ was inspired when early one morning I looked out to sea from the doorway of a house located in Naboro, Fiji. ‘Good Night, Sweet Dreams’ was written for my father’s sister, Frances, whom I had visited regularly in the last three weeks of her life. The song has been sung at many funerals; the most recent one being my dear mother’s in Oct 2019. Other songs, by God’s grace, will be making their way on this page now that I have acquired some competence in a recording software. The first to make its entrance is ‘Springtime is here Again’ written around 2013. The source of inspiration were the flowers of Spring.
